Aztalan and Effigy Mounds in Madison
Visit Aztalan, Wisconsin’s most famous archaeological site, to explore Mississippian Mounds and discover how this 1,000-year-old village was enclosed within a massive fortification. A stop at the Lake Mills Aztalan Museum showcases artifacts collected during the decades when the site was plowed. In Madison, we will explore some remarkably preserved effigy mounds, including a bird with a wing-span of nearly 650 feet. You will learn about when and how the mounds were built, and why some remain while so many others were obliterated as the city of Madison grew.
