Archaeology of the Upper Mississippi Valley
Join us for a guided panoramic loop along the Great River Road from La Crosse, Wisconsin to Prairie du Chien and back along the opposite side of the river into Iowa and Minnesota. Visit an enigmatic mound group partially preserved within a white settler’s cemetery. Experience the drama of the Battle at Bad Axe that ended the 1832 Black Hawk War. And hike among bluff top earthworks at Effigy Mounds National Monument, to one of the most spectacular overlooks of the Mighty Mississippi. On the return, we explore a group of towering Hopewell Mounds built nearly 2,000 years ago. This tour takes a full day.
Length: 8 hours
Age Recommendation: 12 and up
Notes: Most sites are easily accessed. Effigy Mounds involves a semi-strenuous hike to a 500-foot tall bluff top on a well-groomed trail. For those who do not wish to make the Effigy Mounds climb, there is an excellent museum with an interpretive video, and several mounds near the parking lot.
